What Wines Go With Chocolate?


Ask wine expert Natalie MacLean - here's her Top 10 list of wines and chocolate delights, just in time for Valentine's Day...or today...

Wine and chocolate may not taste at all the same, but they share some of the same qualities. "Velvety, sensuous, heady, soothing, tantalizing, luxurious" all are words that can describe them both. And both are liable to show up on Valentine's Day.

Natalie suggests wines to match many foods on her site at www.nataliemaclean.com/matcher and she feels chocolate matches up best with a sweet, full-bodied, high-alcohol wine. Mmmm, sounds like an evening to remember, to me...

3. Chocolate-Orange Cake and Liqueur Muscat, Australia
4. Chocolate with Nuts and Tawny Port, Portugal
5. Milk Chocolate and Tokaji, Hungary
6. Bittersweet Chocolate and Amarone, Italy
7. Chocolate-Dipped Fruit and Icewine, Canada
8. Chocolate Ganache Truffles and Sauternes, France
9. Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake and Framboise, California
10. Chocolate Hearts with Cream Filling and Cream Sherry, Spain

Give me Strawberry Tuxedos and Icewine, please. I'm trying not to drool on my Canadian keyboard.

Don't despair that she is matching wines with chocolate desserts, and you just made chocolate candy. Just do a search with her tool for "desserts" and find a recipe using the kind of chocolate or other ingredients you used in your candy. Voila, a great wine/chocolate combo.
