In the U.S., Hershey's chocolate is what most people think of when they think chocolate. I researched why, since there are so many wonderful chocolate candies out there.
In the United States, mainstream chocolate lovers eat Hershey's chocolate candy. I've been wondering, why Hershey's? so I did some investigating.
We all know that chocolate has been ingested for centuries, with the first recorded use of chocolate dating back to 200 B.C. The cacao bean was mashed and eaten, or mixed with water and other ingredients and drunk by Mayans and Aztecs. After being brought back to the Old World, sweeteners were added.
Eventually someone invented a cocoa press and thought to add cocoa butter and sugar and make the first of what we know as chocolate bars. Someone else invented milk chocolate by combining condensed milk with chocolate liqeur.
It turns out that Milton Hershey's contribution to all this was about the same as Henry Ford's contribution to the car industry: the assembly line. Hershey was able to make enough chocolate cheaply enough to make it affordable and available to the masses.
So there you have it, Hershey's Chocolate, the Model T of the chocolate candy industry.
